LUSH'S MASK OF MAGNAMINTY // REVIEW, SENSITIVE + ACNE PRONE SKIN

As many of you will know, I have suffered horribly with cystic acne since the age of 11. It started off as a few blackheads on my nose and a few bumps on my forehead, to patches of pimples on my cheeks and jawline, to spots that lasted months and often scarred, to full blown cystic acne effecting my face, chest, shoulders, back, arms and thighs. It's as cute as it sounds really!
On top of that, over the past 10 years, my skin has gone from being super oily, to dry, to combination and within the last 2 years has even become sensitive, much to my dismay.
So as I'm sure you can imagine, finding products that work for my skin is a constant battle. Something that I might have sworn by a few years ago, I might not be able to touch now.
I won't get into it too much, but that's the basics! I'd love to do an acne journey post as some stage, but at the minute I'm still figuring it out!

On to the actual product! It's no secret that I'm a huge Lush fan, and their skincare range is no exception. I picked this product up from the Henry Street store, Dublin, after reading pages and pages of people singing its praises, both in blogs and on acne treatment forums.

This product is a face and body mask aimed at combating breakouts. It comes in two sizes, I picked up the smaller of the two to try out at 125g rather than the larger 315g, which is still a really good size! It retails at about €7.50, which is a little more than other fresh face masks as this one is self-preserving, meaning that it lasts a lot longer!

The first thing you'll notice when you open this little pot is the freshness of sweet peppermint oil that just bursts out of it. The first time I smelled this mask was one of those "Oh my God I can smell the future" kind of moments. It should really be marketed as a great way to clear the airways too.
Not only does the peppermint oil leave you feeling refreshed and wide awake on those sluggish days, but it is also a natural antiseptic and promotes the healing of both blemishes and scars. Scars from acne don't just appear like typical indented scars remember, they mostly appear in the form of red or brown areas of skin, which is something I also have a lot of. I've noticed a real difference in my scars since I started using this mask! Existing ones are finally starting to fade, and blemishes that I think may scar do so a lot less often.

As well as peppermint oil helping to fight acne, it also contains bentonite gel and African marigold oil.
Bentonite gel is a natural acne treatment which also helps clean and tighten pores. A thing that I will always welcome as my pores are huge!
African marigold oil is said to have antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. It also helps soothe and protect the skin from breakouts!

I usually use this mask twice a week. One of those days I will apply it all over my face, and another day I'll apply it only to specific problematic areas on my face, and also onto my shoulders just before I hop in the shower. I simply wet my face, scoop some product out with my fingers, and apply it to wherever I need it that day.
You'll find when you scoop some out of the little pot that it's a really thick mask full of little scrubby bits, which are actually aduki beans and evening primrose seeds. Because the mask is so thick and lumpy, you have to apply it to the skin in quite a thick layer to get even coverage. Be careful not to apply it too thickly however, so that it doesn't dry onto the skin. This is just a waste of product and makes it harder to remove. Do be warned, the application can be super messy.

Once the mask is on your skin you get that immediate tingly, cold feeling all over your face that comes with peppermint oil. At first I thought this would be too harsh for my sensitive skin and that it was going to start stinging at any minute, but it never did. This product is totally sensitive skin friendly, at least in my case anyway! It also doesn't hurt relatively newly opened wounds like spots, its as gentle as can be.
This mask contains Kaolin clay, which whilst setting on your skin, pulls impurities like oil out from your pores, but without drying your skin out. I find that products aimed at oily or blemish prone skin can often dry out your skin a bit too much, so this was welcomed. Although I do moisturise when I take this mask off, I don't feel like I desperately need to like I do with other masks.
I'm a big fan of clay in face masks because when the mask is drying you can literally see it working right in front of your eyes as oil spots appear on certain patches of your skin. For me they show up mostly on my forehead and the sides of my nose.

Wash off the mask after about 15 minutes, plenty of time for it to dry and stiffen. As I get quite a build up of oils and dead skin, I love to get a really good scrub out of this mask, so I find it most effective to remove with a face cloth. I simply wet the cloth, and take off the product in circular motions.
This part is my favourite thing about this mask. You're not just taking it off like you would with other face masks, you're actually exfoliating as you rinse. It's almost like a two in one product!

Mostly dry mask / Note the oil spots on my forehead, nose, cheeks and chin
Many people may be thinking that after all that peppermint oil and rigorous scrubbing, your skin is going to be red raw by the time this thing is off. Well Lush have thought of it all so no need to worry. The face mask includes honey and vanilla, which counteracts the tingly peppermint to soothe your skin and reduce redness!

I don't think my skin has ever been as soft as it is when I use this mask. Its one of those products that from the first use, you know it has earned a permanent place in your skincare routine.
I honestly don't have any cons on this product, except that I find I have to leave quite a large gap between the mask and my eyes as the peppermint oil can make them water. But that's pretty much to be expected.
I recommend it for all skin types, except mature skin as it may be too harsh.

Have you ever used the Mask of Magnaminty? Do you plan on buying it? Tell me your pros and cons in the comments below!

  2. I've never used a LUSH face mask before but I hear such good things! I get occasional breakouts and this sounds like it'd be perfect for targeting problem areas...Although sometimes I do find peppermint oil can be rather harsh on the old nostrils!

Noxzema Anti-Acne Gel, Dermalogica Medicated Clearing Gel, Stridex and Oxy products are example of products that include this ingredient. Such lotions show quick and long lasting results.
